The Pedestrian Crossing Control
Guide promotes uniformity of how pedestrian crossing controls are implemented
in Canada. It encourages a holistic perspective to pedestrian crossing control
by incorporating both numeric criteria and qualitative engineering judgement
into a systematic approach to supporting decisions, implementation, monitoring
and evaluation. This approach provides the flexibility needed to address unique
local conditions.
The Pedestrian Crossing Control
Guide is intended for use by those involved in the design, operation, and
maintenance of the road system; it may also be of value to educators and
students. The Guide includes a decision support tool to help identify the type
of traffic control device that is most suitable for a location's cross section,
vehicular exposure, and pedestrian demand.
The Guide is intended to augment
the information about pedestrian crossing control devices and their
applications contained in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for
Canada (MUTCDC). This is the third edition of the Pedestrian Crossing Control
Guide, replacing the second edition which was published in 2012.
